An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.

One account, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However these probabilities had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on Monday seeks to ban public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
